After a year of playing country music together, Phill Brush (bass/manager) and Stephen Castillo (lead vocals/songwriter) founded the Western Express in 2019. Two years later, they’ve added Devon Canady (lead guitar) and Jamie Foster (drums) to build out a sound that’s as unique as Texas. Stephen’s upbeat writing style is driven by catchy hooks and clever lyrics, bringing original country music that will have you singing along on the first listen. In the rich tradition of American country music, the Western Express also brings to life the greatest songs of the past 100 years—songs virtually everyone knows by heart, and some that everyone should. The band accomplishes this with a sound that’s all their own, breathing fresh creativity into some of the most iconic music of the 20th century.
The Western Express continues to play the most well-known and beloved dancehalls and venues in Central Texas. Since the band was founded, the boys have played countless nights in the restaurant at the most famous honky tonk in the world—the legendary Broken Spoke. The have also played a recurring slot at Guero’s in the South Congress district of Austin. Look for the band at other great honky tonks like Sagebrush and the White Horse, and historic Hill Country dancehalls like Mercer Street and Hye Hall.
